I'm Off If Wallabies Don't win World Cup, Says Cheika

I'm Off If Wallabies Don't win World Cup, Says Cheika - Australia coach Michael Cheika says he will walk away at the end of his contract next year if the Wallabies don't win the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Cheika took Australia to the final of the last tournament in England in 2015 so believes anything less than a victory in Yokohama on Nov. 2 next year would represent a lack of progress.

"The way I see it is like this: we came second in the last one and you have got to improve," he told Wednesday's Daily Telegraph.

"So there is only winning the World Cup, otherwise it is probably somebody else's opportunity to do it.

"What I would like to do in the interim is leave enough legacy in there so that that person has the best possible chance to do it as well."

Cheika took over from Ewen McKenzie in 2014 and won the World Rugby coach of the year award after Australia's run to the final the following season.

His team has struggled at times since as he has overhauled his squad in preparation for 2019, introducing a host of new players to international rugby.

The Wallabies have won 24 of his 45 matches in charge, including a victory over the world champion All Blacks in Brisbane last year.

Cheika said he had been entirely focussed on creating the structures to ensure long-term success for his country during his time in the job.

"I want to be up in the stand in the future, watching Australia play and watching them kill it and play well," Cheika told the paper.

"I think people think that's garbage sometimes, that I say that. But that’s genuine.

"So, in a World Cup, that’s a good chance to leave and to leave behind the legacy that you’ve built in the interim.

"That’s the target. You have to do better. And doing better is coming first."

The French Countryside And Castles To Visit

The French Countryside And Castles To Visit - There was a sharp bite to the evening air as we streamed out of the Lido de Paris theatre after the French dinner show.

It was almost 11pm but the night was still young by Paris standards and another group was waiting in line for the late cabaret show of the Paris Merveilles.

Across the road from the theatre is the distinctive Louis Vuitton store. It had closed for the night but the lights were still blazing inside and it glowed like an expensive jewel. Three times to Paris and I have yet to step inside – something is wrong with me.

Be my guest
The dinner show and the free flow of wine was the finale of our guided holiday by Trafalgar Tours. For its Treasures of France package, the company takes travellers beyond the usual stops and its “Be My Guest” segment is where you get a more intimate glimpse of local life.

Our trip was less about Paris than the sights, sounds and taste of some of the famous chateaux or castles located in the countryside of France.

Chateaux? Castles? I can immediately see thought bubbles with the word “Yawn!” forming above the heads of my friends. That had been my reaction too because I am the typical Malaysian – not too much history during my holidays, thank you.

However, the French chateaux are something else. They were built amid spectacular landscapes, surrounded by manicured gardens and, as for the history, not everything about it makes you want to yawn.

Early Hollywood
The French aristocracy was sort of like an early version of Hollywood – they had wealth and titles (the jewellery box of one of the queens was as big as my luggage) and they were very glamorous even though they ate with their hands until someone introduced them to the fork.

And, like Hollywood characters, they were prone to over-the-top, outrageous and scandalous behaviour.

Too bad that much of it came to an end in the French Revolution of 1789.

Former aristocrats now have to earn a living like the rest of us and that was how we arrived at the 17th century chateau of Remy Esporce.

Call me Remy
“Call me Remy,” said the former Count whose family barely escaped death during the French Revolution when the marauding peasants stopped a few kilometres from their castle.

Remy is not exactly poor – he owns some 200ha of land but the taxes are probably draining him. His chateau is now a B&B and he also hosts visits from travel groups. He greeted us looking every inch the lord of the manor – blue checked shirt, tweed jacket and corduroy slacks with expensive-looking brown leather shoes.

The chateau looked plain from the outside but inside, it was as though time had stood still. From the furniture and wall panelling to the paintings and rugs, the interior had a nostalgic vibe.

Remy and his wife, a petite woman originally from Mauritius, had prepared a beautiful buffet lunch. There were cheeses, macaroons, pumpkin soup, fresh fruit and salad, an array of cold cuts, unforgettable pate and lots of wine and champagne.

What’s a castle?
The charm of France lies in its picturesque countryside. Our trip took us through the Loire Valley which is famous for its castles. There are some 350 castles in this area but we only had time for four of them.

The Loire Valley is like a painting with rolling hills, trees changing from green to golden and rivers with crystal clear waters unlike our teh tarik rivers back home.

This was where King Francois I (1515-1547) spent his childhood in the Amboise Chateau which sits on a hill overlooking a view to die for.

A dark side
The sites of most castles were not picked for the views but for defence and strategic reasons because early century France was a dangerous state marked by wars. The Amboise Chateau had a dark side because it was also used as a prison and there are stories of beheadings and hangings.

Francoise I, a towering figure with a nose like Pinnochio’s, was fortunate to live in a relatively peaceful time. He was a patron of the arts, initiated the French Renaissance and invited Leonardo Da Vinci to live and work there.

Tourists tend to ooh and aah over a sculpture of Da Vinci, naked and lounging on the bank of the River Loire. Da Vinci is portrayed with the body of a surfer, with muscles rippling from neck to ankle. In reality, though, by the time this genius arrived in Amboise, he was in his 60s with one foot in the grave. His body is buried in a chapel across from the chateau.

Palaces of pleasure
The aristocrats settled here for a reason – these were palaces of pleasure where they could party all day and night, far from prying eyes and the toxic political atmosphere of Paris. Besides, the air was fresh and they could hunt to their hearts delight.

Hunting was a royal sport and Francoise I decided to build a “hunting lodge” in Chambord. The Chambord Chateau was built to impress – 140 rooms of Renaissance architecture surrounded by forested grounds reputed to be the size of central Paris.

It also boasts a double-deck spiral staircase – imagine our multi-level highways – where two people could go up and down without having to meet each other.

The king spent only a few months at the lodge and did not live to see it completed. Perhaps all the hunting resulted in some bad karma.

Getting intimate

The ooh la la moment came when we arrived at the Chenonceau Chateau. It was the most beautiful of the castles we had seen thus far, it draws a million visitors a year and was listed as a World Heritage site in July 2017.

One might call it the “mistress chateau” because it was gifted to the enthralling Diane de Poitiers by King Henri II.

The mistress was said to be 20 years older than the king, but she held him by the you-know-what. She also had exquisite taste and the wonderful gardens fronting the castle is her brainchild.

However, the long-suffering wife Queen Catherine had her revenge when the king died. With her son on the throne, she forced the mistress out, took over the castle, built her own garden and threw fabulous parties. But the general opinion is that the mistress’ garden was more beautiful.

Voyeuristic look
The most fascinating thing about all these castles are the interiors where you get a voyeuristic look at how the blue-bloods lived – the beds they slept in, the thrones they ruled from, how they dined, their hand-woven wall tapestries and mysterious passages.

It was fabulously grand but pales in comparison to the homes of today’s super rich.

Moreover, bathrooms and toilets were not a priority for these royals. Henri II apparently bathed only nine times in his lifetime and when he felt like pooping, he would do it on the spot, whether on the stairs, at the fireplace or in a convenient corner of the bedroom.

Historical places like these often come alive when you have a good guide and we did have some of the best guides ever, especially in Giovana Agrawal who is not only sweet and kind but a terrific multi-tasker.

Dark history

A break from all those castles came when we arrived in Arromanches in the heart of Normandy, better known as the D-Day landings.

The dramatic coastline here was where thousands of soldiers became ducks when they disembarked from their boats to a barrage of German gunfire during World War II.

History belongs to the victors and the Normandy landings are now regarded as where the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation began. This place had seen great tragedy and so much blood had flowed here that many who visit find themselves speaking in hushed tones as they walked past deep craters caused by bombs and gun bunkers left behind by the Germans.

Two of the soldiers who died here were the inspiration for the Hollywood movie Saving Private Ryan.

I see dead people
We ended a day of stunning blue skies and crisp weather at the memorial and cemetery for those who perished. A cemetery is not my idea of a holiday and I was thinking of staying back on the bus because I sometimes imagine that I see dead people.

But I am glad I did not because there was something special about this burial grounds overlooking Omaha Beach, the code name for the stretch of beach where the American battalions landed.

Despite the many visitors that day, there was a poignant stillness in the air, a sense that those who died are at peace. All these men died in a war that they did not really understand and it was fitting that they had been honoured in this serene memorial setting.

France truly is more than just Paris.

There’s A Chemical Used In Everyday Products That’s Making Us Fat!

There’s A Chemical Used In Everyday Products That’s Making Us Fat! - Chemicals used in food wrappers, nonstick pan coatings, even clothing may boost body weight by interfering with metabolism, especially in women, according to American researchers. These chemicals, known as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), have previously been linked with cancer, hormone disruption, immune dysfunction, high cholesterol and obesity.

“Now, for the first time, our findings have revealed a novel pathway through which PFASs might interfere with human body weight regulation, and thus, contribute to the obesity epidemic,” said senior author Qi Sun, assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard University TH Chan School of Public Health in the United States.

The researchers found that PFASs – also known as “obesogens” because they interfere with body weight regulation – were linked to a slower resting metabolic rate. People with higher levels of PFASs in their blood had more sluggish metabolisms after weight loss.

The study tracked data from 621 overweight and obese participants in a clinical trial on weight loss conducted in the mid-2000s. The study looked at the effects of four heart-healthy diets on weight loss over a period of two years. Participants also had levels of PFASs in their blood measured.

On average, those in the programme lost 6.4 kg in the first six months, but regained 2.7kg over the course of the following year-and-a-half. “Those who gained the most weight back had the highest blood concentrations of PFASs, and the link was strongest among women,” said the report in the journal PLOS Medicine.

“On average, women who had the highest PFAS blood levels (in the top third) regained 1.7-2.2 kg more body weight than women in the lowest third.” Researchers also discovered that those with higher blood concentrations of PFASs “were significantly associated with lower resting metabolic rates”.

PFASs have been around for 60 years and have contaminated drinking water near some industrial sites, military bases, and wastewater treatment plants. They can accumulate in drinking water, persist for a long time in the body, and are difficult to avoid.

“We typically think about PFASs in terms of rare health problems like cancer, but it appears they are playing a role in obesity, a major health problem facing millions around the globe,” said study co-author Philippe Grandjean, adjunct professor of environmental health at the Harvard Chan School.

“The findings suggest that avoiding or reducing PFAS exposure may help people maintain a stable body weight after they successfully lose some weight, especially for women.”

Merkel Ally Promises Germany Will Stick To Schaueble's Course

Merkel Ally Promises Germany Will Stick To Schaueble's Course - Germany will stick to the stern fiscal orthodoxy it pursued under long-serving conservative finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble even if the key post is ceded to a Social Democrat in the next government, acting finance chief Peter Altmaier said.

Over his eight years in office, Schaeuble became famous in Europe and the world for his focus on budgetary discipline at home and in the euro zone, resisting calls for cost-free write-offs in the heavily indebted euro zone periphery.

Although something of a hate figure in southern Europe, especially Greece, where unemployment remains high, he is popular at home for bequeathing Germany a fast-growing economy with little inflation and record low unemployment.

"We will make sure that the successful work of Wolfgang Schaeuble is carried forward," said Altmaier, a close Merkel ally slated to become economy minister if a new conservative-SPD "grand coalition" takes office.

Both camps lost ground to a surging far right in September's national election. The SPD, reluctant to repeat the bruising experience, insisted on taking the top finance job -- prompting rumblings of discontent in Merkel's camp.

"We will stick to a budget with no new debt. We won't raise any taxes," said Altmaier. "And on a European level we will be responsible with German interests," Altmaier said in the interview with the Funke media group.

Even if an SPD finance minister were minded to pursue a less sober fiscal policy, he would be bound by collective government responsibility, he added.

Schaeuble stepped down as finance minister after the election to become president of the Bundestag, Germany's parliament, which, with the entry of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, is at its most fragmented in decades.

The SPD's membership is currently voting on whether to endorse the party leadership's decision to govern with Merkel for another four years. The results of the postal ballot are expected this weekend.

Top 10 Films That Made Sridevi The Indian Cinema Icon She Is

Top 10 Films That Made Sridevi The Indian Cinema Icon She Is - Actor par excellence, dancer extraordinaire and possibly the only among her contemporaries to master a comic timing, Sridevi leaves behind a void impossible to fill.

Sridevi passed away in Dubai on Feb 24, at the age of 54.

Across a span of 300 films and 50 years, she enjoyed diverse roles and an opportunity to reach out to different sections of the audience. In an interview with Hindustan Times, she had spoken about her love of being the leading lady in multiple projects.

“I got to wear different clothes, I got to do the best roles. If the picture does well, I’m surprised and happy; and if it doesn’t do well, it’s part of your profession. You see what went wrong and try not to do the same mistake,” she had said.

Awarded the Padma Shri in 2013, Sridevi was known to be reserved and generally kept to herself. Reminiscing about a meeting with her, actor Juhi Chawla said: “We lived in the same building. Once in a while when I would go for a walk, I would see her jogging, with earphones plugged in. I would often see her taking evening walks when there would be fewer people around. She would often say hello. She was very shy and would prefer to be on her own. I met her on several occasions and she has always been very sweet and soft-spoken in real life as well. She kept more to herself. She was just fabulous and magical on screen and I will always be her fan.”

Married to producer Boney Kapoor in 1996, Sridevi took an eight-year sabbatical from Hindi movies before returning with English Vinglish in 2012, a comeback that was received warmly by the audience.

Sridevi’s last film in the Southern film industry was a Tamil fantasy film, Puli (2015), which won her many accolades. The actor was to be seen next in a cameo in Zero, directed by filmmaker Anand L. Rai.

Here are 10 cinematic milestones of Sridevi’s worth revisiting today
Thunaivan (1969): Sridevi plays Lord Muruga in the devotional film shot in both black-and-white and Eastman colour.

Moondram Pirai (1982): Balu Mahendra’s immortal classic features Sridevi as a woman who regresses to childhood after a car accident and Kamal Haasan as a kind school teacher who takes her in. It was remade in Hindi as Sadma.

Himmatwala (1983): K.Raghavendra Rao’s musical blockbuster co-starring Jeetendra brought Sridevi to the notice of Hindi-speaking audiences and earned her the infamous “Thunder Thighs” title.

Nagina (1986): By the mid-1980s, Sridevi had firmly established herself as a bankable star in Bollywood. Harmesh Malhotra’s tale of a shape-shifting woman was ample proof.

Mr India (1987): Bollywood’s iconic superhero film featured a relatively unknown cast with only one marquee name to bolster it. Sridevi plays an idealistic reporter helping the invisible man on the job who eventually falls in love with him.

Chaalbaaz (1989): In Pankaj Parashar’s comedy, Sridevi plays twins separated at birth: a simpleton tormented by her relatives and a street-smart dancer. The film that brought her incomparable comic timing to the fore remains one of her best recognised performances.

Chandni (1989): Yash Chopra’s romantic drama made Sridevi what she was meant to be: the top female star of her time. A full-bloodied singing, dancing spectacle, it was the hugest commercial blockbuster of the year.

Kshana Kshanam (1992): Sridevi plays a petty thief in Ram Gopal Varma’s Telugu-language road thriller. The sleeper hit won her much acclaim.

Lamhe (1991): Yash Chopra’s coming-of-age romantic film may have been a commercial failure at the time of release but has gained cult status since. Sridevi plays an older woman whom a young Anil Kapoor is besotted with. Many years later, she’s also the woman’s daughter in love with an older Kapoor.

English Vinglish (2012): Sridevi made a much anticipated comeback in Gauri Shinde’s comedy drama about a middle-aged woman discovering herself after several years of marriage and a language handicap. – Tribune News Service

Pacemen Promise Bruising South Africa-Australia Test Series

Pacemen Promise Bruising South Africa-Australia Test Series - The pace attacks of South Africa and Australia are preparing to slug it out for supremacy in what is likely to be a bruising four-test series over the next five weeks.

The countries will pin their hopes of victory on their quicks with seamer friendly wickets on order for the tests in Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Johannesburg, and the contests set to be dominated by fiery exchanges of fast bowling.

The series between the world's second and third-ranked teams starts on Thursday with the first test at Kingsmead in Durban and both countries brimming with confidence after success in their last respective series.

South Africa's bowlers struck fear into India in their opening two tests in January before the tourists settled in and won a consolation game in the three-match series.

This was achieved without injury-plagued veteran Dale Steyn but Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada proved a potent trio, supplemented by the arrival on the test scene of 21-year-old Lungi Ngidi.

He took nine wickets in the last two tests against India at an average of 17.22 and reached speeds of 150 km/h.

Australia produced record-breaking bowling performances as they thumped England 4-0 in the five-test Ashes series from November to January. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc took 20 or more wickets each, as did spinner Nathan Lyon.

"I think there's always a couple of series a year the whole cricketing world turns to and it feels like this series is going to be one," said Cummins after Australia won a three-day warm-up against South Africa A at the weekend.

"I feel like we play a similar brand of cricket, both try and be quite aggressive and brave and take the game on. And both teams have some fast bowlers that want to... intimidate the batsmen."

Batting reputations will be tested with Australia captain Steve Smith the primary target for the home bowlers and the hosts looking to exploit some indifferent form of late displayed by talisman AB de Villiers for the South Africans.

An injury to his right index finger has kept De Villiers out for the last fortnight, along with captain Faf du Plessis who has a finger injury of his own to add to recent back ailments.

But both are in the South Africa squad for the first two tests and will be the mainstay of the home batting lineup.

How To Burn The Post-CNY Calories Away Effectively

How To Burn The Post-CNY Calories Away Effectively - Whether you were happily scarfing down Po Po’s pineapple tarts or stress binging on love letters while Aunty Mei grilled you about still being single, Chinese New Year (CNY) is indeed a time when most of us tend to indulge a little too much.

Post CNY, you get back on that treadmill, do your time at the gym and notice some great results… at first. Then the nightmare begins.

You continue working out and eating right, but still find that the pestering needle on the judgy weighing scale is just not pointing in the right direction.

Why is that?

Well, the answer could be as simple as changing up your exercise routine.

Plateau problems

When you don’t change your exercise routine, you could end up in this state called plateauing. This plateau, of course, has got nothing to do with any kind of terrain, but is instead linked to your fitness levels.

Daily exercise is good, but when you constantly repeat the same exercises, your body adapts and gets so used to it that you end up burning fewer calories. This is classic plateauing.

When you’re stuck in this stage, you notice decreased or no results at all, which can be extremely frustrating.

Prevent boredom

Another reason to spice up your routine is to prevent boredom.

While it may seem like a trivial matter, boredom can be linked to demotivation, reduced energy levels and a lack of effort when exercising.

For example, a proper sit-up can give you those to-die-for fireman calendar abs, but if you’re bored, you will tend to potong jalan, or cut corners, and focus more on the number of sit-ups, rather than if you’re actually doing the exercise properly.

To spice things up, try variants. Maybe a raised leg crunch, a frog crunch, or even a Russian twist.

Search online for them and see. There are countless variants available and most of them are for free. (Yay!)

Work different muscles

Targeting different muscles is also important. You may think you have done your gym time by doing the usual treadmill, cycling, treadmill, cycling routine, but are you really getting a full body workout?

One way to overcome this is to get a friendly gym instructor to teach you how to use all the different machines (yes, even the scary-looking ones!) and you could end up targeting all sorts of muscles that you never even knew existed.

Your body will thank you for it and you will soon notice the results you were praying for.

Protect from overuse

Sticking to the same routine for long periods of time can also strain your muscles and cause injury due to overuse.

Running is great, but if you do the same thing every single day and push the same muscles in the same way, you are asking for trouble.

Your muscles need time to recover from strain and alternating your exercise regime to perhaps include yoga or swimming from time to time could help provide a little downtime and prevent any kind of permanent damage.

Join a class

Another easy way to switch things up is to join a fitness class. The options are limitless; from yoga to Zumba, HIIT to spinning, and if you’re up to it, even boxing!

Fitness classes could be your key to breaking out of your routine. In fact, past research has concluded that synchronised physical activity such as group exercise
classes, could help improve your mood, reduce stress levels, and even encourage you to stick with the program.

It could also be a great way to expand your friend circle or a healthy way to spend time with existing friends.

So, are you ready to switch things up?

Try signing up for GuavaPass and gain access to a whole host of exercise options.

The simple app allows you to pre-book a variety of classes in over 30 gyms (and growing!) in Kuala Lumpur, and for those who like travelling, you can use your
GuavaPass membership in Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Dubai, Shanghai, Manila, Jakarta, Beijing and Abu Dhabi.

U.S. Appeals Court Says Title VII Covers Discrimination Based On Sexual Orientation

U.S. Appeals Court Says Title VII Covers Discrimination Based On Sexual Orientation - A U.S. appeals court in Manhattan on Monday ruled that a federal law banning sex bias in the workplace also prohibits discrimination against gay employees, becoming only the second court to do so.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overruled prior decisions and said that a worker's sex is necessarily a factor in discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The ruling went against a court brief filed by the Trump administration in 2017 that said Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was not intended to provide protections to gay workers.

The 2nd Circuit revived a lawsuit by the estate of Donald Zarda, a former skydiving instructor on Long Island who said he was fired after he told a customer he was gay and she complained. Zarda's estate was backed in the appeal by dozens of large companies, including Alphabet Inc's Google, Microsoft Corp, CBS Corp and Viacom Inc.

Zarda's former employer, Altitude Express Inc, and companies that have faced similar lawsuits have argued that when Congress adopted Title VII more than 50 years ago, it did not consider whether the law's ban on sex bias included discrimination based on sexual orientation.

But lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender groups and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have increasingly argued that sexual orientation is a function of a person's gender.

The 2nd Circuit agreed on Monday in its 10-3 decision. Circuit Judge Robert Katzmann wrote that even though Congress had not sought to address gay bias in Title VII, laws "often go beyond the principal evil to cover reasonably comparable evils.”

Saul Zabell, a lawyer for Altitude Express, said he agreed with the ruling on Title VII. But he said Zarda did not face discrimination when he worked for the company.

Lawyers for Zarda's estate did not respond to a request for comment.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a Democrat who filed a court brief supporting Zarda, praised the decision in a statement.

"No employer should be able to penalize its employees because of who they love," Schneiderman said.

Last April, the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit became the first court to find that Title VII bans gay bias in the workplace.

The U.S. Supreme Court in December declined to take up a different case out of Georgia that posed the same question.

South Korea Says It Hopes For Constructive Talks Between U.S., North Korea

South Korea Says It Hopes For Constructive Talks Between U.S., North Korea - South Korea said on Monday it hopes for "constructive" talks between North Korea and the United States, a day after a delegation from the North told South Korean President Moon Jae-in that Pyongyang was open to talks with Washington.

"We hope constructive talks will begin between North Korea and the United States through an appropriate opportunity," said Baik Tae-hyun, spokesman of South Korea's Ministry of Unification.

The North Korean delegation, led by former military intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol who is accused of being behind a deadly 2010 attack on a South Korean warship, is widely expected to meet with other South Korean government officials on Monday before leaving Tuesday.

Baik said no events linked to the delegation had been confirmed yet. North Korea has denied all allegations linked to the torpedoed warship, which killed 46 sailors.

Kim Yong Chol and his delegation will leave on Tuesday, just as North and South Korean officials gather on the North's side of the Panmunjom truce village to discuss Pyongyang's attendance at the Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics.

A total of 299 North Koreans who were in South Korea for the Winter Olympics, including a cheering squad, returned to the North on Monday.

The White House has said any talks with North Korea must lead to an end to its nuclear programme, and that its sanctions on the North would continue. Washington announced on Friday it was imposing its largest package of sanctions to pressure North Korea to give up its nuclear and missile programmes.

North Korea on Sunday condemned the latest round of sanctions imposed by the United States, accusing it of trying to undermine an improvement in inter-Korean relations during the Winter Olympics, state media said in a statement.

North Korea has not fired any missiles since November last year but it defends the weapons programmes as essential to deter U.S. aggression.

Alibaba Turns Heads As It Joins Games Sponsorship Waltz

Alibaba Turns Heads As It Joins Games Sponsorship Waltz - The Olympic movement's new Chinese global sponsor, e-commerce group Alibaba , came to the Pyeongchang Winter Games promising to revolutionise the experience for spectators, from buying tickets to souvenirs.

But other sponsors quickly reminded Alibaba that its revolution can't happen if it steps on their turf.

Many of the services Alibaba wants to change, such as buying tickets online or shopping at the Games for Olympic-branded clothes and souvenirs, could involve trespassing on the territory of other IOC partners, experts and sponsors said.

Alibaba is the Olympic "E-Commerce Platform Services" provider under a deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars unveiled in 2016. But Visa Inc is the Olympic payment technology partner and also has an e-commerce role at the Games.

"In our mind it's very clear, consumer e-commerce is our category. Business to business is theirs," said Visa's Korea manager, Iain Jamieson, who attended the Pyeongchang Games.

"They'll find their feet. It's their first Games. They have the next Winter Olympics (in Beijing). I can understand that they want to make a strong statement up front," he added.

When Beijing hosts the Winter Games in 2022, Alibaba will still have to pick its way around the dozen other top global sponsors of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a dance whose rules are set out by the IOC's sponsorship regulations.

Since the IOC created its top sponsor program in the 1980s, it has sliced and diced its sponsorship categories and granted strict marketing rights to different companies, ensuring sponsors do not compete with each other.

For example, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930.KS>, as the wireless communication equipment sponsor, can have nothing to do with cameras at the Games because rival Panasonic Corp <6752.T> is the global Olympic camera sponsor.

In a sign of its intentions, Alibaba set up a marketing showroom at the Games to demonstrate potential future uses of its technology, such as using facial recognition to help personalize the shopping experience.

Alibaba Chief Executive Daniel Zhang said in an interview in Pyeongchang that the company was also looking to improve how merchandise is sold during the Games.

"Why do people have to stand in line for such a long time?" said. He described a scenario where people can see items on their phone, order them and collect them at the Olympic park.

Zhang said Alibaba was looking at which specific areas to focus on with its IOC deal and was also working closely with the Beijing Games organisers.

"We are talking with the IOC and Beijing and other partners to brainstorm. Pretty soon we'll try to narrow down to very concrete ideas," he added.

THE SPONSORSHIP DANCE

Alibaba said it had no problem working with other sponsors, saying the Games enabled it to deepen its relationships with other large companies.

Alibaba has said it is in talks with other top sponsors Procter & Gamble Co , Coca-Cola Co , Samsung and Intel Corp to find opportunities to work together in the short and long term.

An executive familiar with Coca-Cola's thinking said it saw no conflict with Alibaba's current e-commerce deal and that it would still leave room for Coke to do a marketing deal around the Olympics with another e-commerce firm.

Alibaba also needs to be mindful of French technology consulting company Atos SE .

Alibaba is also the cloud services provider of the Olympics while Atos is the IT partner. The French firm's Olympic website also makes reference to the cloud.

Alibaba said in a statement before the Games that Atos was "obliged to remove this communication on their website".

Shaun Whatling, chief executive of sponsorship consultancy Redmandarin, which has worked with IOC sponsors, said Atos as an existing sponsor should have managed its sponsorship category more actively to avoid Alibaba taking over all cloud services.

Atos did not respond to a request for comment.

IOC executive Christian Voigt, who oversees the top sponsorship programme, told Reuters that Atos was not a cloud services partner and it instead looked after integration of IT systems around the Olympic sites.

"Of course, the use of the cloud is possible for others, it's just that the marketing around it and focus for the Olympic movement is just Alibaba," Voigt said.

"Our categories are pretty clearly crafted. We have no overlap and we are quite careful in the selection process."

Alibaba can work well with the other sponsors and still look to steal the spotlight away from them.

"Alibaba's made a strong start as an IOC partner. It's understood the need to use (the Olympics) as a platform for a big vision, which many other partners fail to do," said Whatling of Redmandarin.
