Reporters arriving in the state Gerakan headquarters on Wed were piqued to find Teng sitting wordless, wearing a surgical mask.
After all pressmen had arrived, he removed the mask to show his mouth, sealed with two strip of criss-crossing black tape.
Less than three minutes later, Teng got up to leave.
Reporters intercepted him and launched a flurry of questions at him before he finally spoke.
"Today, it's me. Tomorrow, it's you all. The next day, the normal, common rakyat will get the same thing," Teng said in a hushed voice before sealing his mouth again.
The press conference was called over the notice of action for defamation that Teng recently received from Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
In a seven-paragraph media statement, Teng said he viewed the legal demand as intimidation, among other heated remarks.
Gerakan members also gave each journalist a surgical mask with criss-crossed black tape stuck on it.
In his written statement, Teng urged NGOs to continue speaking out on public interest issues and said he would not be intimidated by the action against him.
He said that he would answer Lim's complaints in court and would continue dishing out new information on Pulau Jerejak and other land deals.
Lim is suing Teng over his comments last month made regarding a Penang Development Corporation deal surrounding a piece of development land in Pulau Jerejak.
