Lion Dance Contest Kicks Off UKM’s Pesta Ang Pow - The annual Pesta Ang Pow Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is back with more fun-filled activities and cultural performances.
For the first time, the undergraduates will perform a musical theatre show to entertain the guests at a gala dinner.
MCA Youth chairman Datuk Chong Sin Woon, an alumnus of the university, said the Chinese New Year activities were among the main events at UKM annually.
“This is one of the two big events organised yearly by students of Chinese descent. The other one is Pesta Tanglung, held in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival,” he added.
Organising chairman Wong Choon Yee said this year’s Pesta Ang Pow kicked off with a lion dance competition.
On Wednesday, seven lion dance troupes comprising UKM students competed in the preliminary round of the competition.
“Six teams with the highest scores will lock horns with each other in the final on Feb 24,” he said at a joint press conference with Chong yesterday.
He said the highlight of the celebration would be the Chinese New Year gala dinner to be held at the university’s Dewan Tunku Abdul Razak on March 5.
“We will be performing a musical theatre show that emphasises the importance of preserving our traditional culture,” he said.
The drama, he added, was a collaboration between the students and director Emiko Ten from E House Theatre and Production.
