Shuttler Jin Wei Nominated For Podium Programme After Solid Display Last Season - National No. 1 women’s singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei has received an early 17th birthday gift.
The former world junior champion, whose birthday is on Jan 30, has been nominated for the Podium Programme.
This is based on her potential to be a medal winner at the next Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) coaching and training committee chairman Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria said yesterday that world No. 31 Jin Wei and five others would be promoted to the Podium Programme based on their outstanding performances last year.
The others are Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin and Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing.
Seven shuttlers are already under the programme. They are Lee Chong Wei, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying.
“We’ve named Jin Wei and five others based on their good showing last season,” said Norza, who is also the BAM deputy president after the coaching and training committee meeting at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.
“The Podium Programme has expanded its selection criteria. Those with the potential of winning medals at the upcoming major Games – Olympic, Commonwealth and Asian – can be recommended.”
Norza also named the team for the inaugural Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from Feb 14-19.
He described the squad as the “team for the future”.
“Jin Wei and the others in the line-up are our future. They are likely to be seeded second in the tournament,” said Norza.
BAM also named the 18-man and 18-woman training squad for the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games. The two squads will be reduced to nine players each prior to the Games.
Norza also said that BAM would come up with special incentives to encourage more players to improve on their world ranking.
“We may let the players fly on business class if they’re ranked in the top two in the world,” he said.
