Jin Wei Knows Now That It Pays To Tell The Truth - It looks like national No. 1 woman singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei (pic) has learnt the hard way that honesty is the best policy.
The teenager was recently dropped from the squad for the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships from Feb 14-19 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for not coming clean on her physical condition.
She had competed in the Malaysian Masters in Sibu two weeks ago despite carrying an ankle injury. That led to a meek second-round 12-21, 10-21 loss to unseeded Lee Chia-hsin of Taiwan in the second-tier tournament.
And that – the defeat and failure to tell the truth about her condition – didn’t go down well with Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost, who then replaced her with Lee Ying Ying for the mixed team competition.
“I did not get 2017 off to a good start. I was not truthful about my condition and had to withdraw from the mixed team tournament,” said Jin Wei, who turned 17 years old on Monday.
“I’ve learned my lesson ... I won’t repeat it.”
Jin Wei, who is undergoing a four-week rehabilitation programme, has promised she won’t rush back for the National Badminton Championships in Ulu Kinta, Perak (Feb 19-23) and the All-England in Birmingham (March 7-12).
“I’ve completed two weeks of rehab ... I’ll get the approval from my physiotherapist (Sandra Fielder) and coach (Rony Agustinus) before deciding whether to defend my title at the national meet,” said Jin Wei, who has been given top seeding in the women’s singles event.
“My dream is to play in my first All-England. The coaches have already submitted my name. I’ll do my best to be in good shape before the Superseries event.
“I’m taking all this positively ... I’m looking forward to getting back on my feet again.”
