Misbun Just Glad To Watch Son Play Again - Datuk Misbun Sidek was all smiles after seeing his son Ramdan(pic) back in action after a two-year lapse.
Ramdan won his first men’s singles match when he defeated Goh Ting Yu of Sabah 21-15, 21-11 in just 22 minutes in the second round of the National Championships qualifying tournament at the Sri Perdana Hall in Ulu Kinta, Perak, yesterday.
He will meet Bukit Jalil Sports School’s Chia Wei Jie today. If he wins, he will face national back-up shuttler Tan Jia Wei in the opening round of the tournament proper tomorrow.
Ramdan is also going strong in men’s doubles with younger brother Shawal.
The duo defeated Kedah’s Khor Jun Yuan-Tan Chong Hao 21-9, 21-9 in just 18 minutes to set up a match against the Negri Sembilan-Kedah combination of Mohd Syazmil Zailan-Mohd Puzi Muhd Syauqi.
Misbun admitted to having doubts over his son’s ability to recover from an Achilles tendon injury, “but (2012 national champion) Ramdan refused to give up”.
“When Ramdan injured his Achilles tendon (in 2015), he told me that he wanted to play again. I told him that it was impossible to come back from such an injury,” said Misbun.
“But he was persistent. Now, he has fulfilled his wish. As a father, I’m proud that he never gave up.”
