Petaling Jaya BC In Semis Of Purple League - Former international Goh Giap Chin (pic) was the hero as Petaling Jaya BC came out victorious in the "Battle of Petalings" to reach the semi-finals of the SS Purple League.
Giap Chin stunned former world No.3 Kenichi Tago of Japan 11-9, 6-11, 11-4, 6-11, 11-3 in the second men's singles to secure Petaling Jaya a 12-11 triumph over Petaling BC at the Arena of Stars here on Sunday.
Petaling's Liew Daren drew the first blood by beating Dani Harsheel in the opening singles match 11-6, 8-11, 3-11, 11-10, 5-4, but Petaling Jaya swiftly fought back through their Chinese import Deng Xuan as she upset the formbook to beat her former world No.1 compatriot Wang Yihan 11-7, 4-11, 11-9, 2-11, 11-7.
Former national men's doubles ace Koo Kien Keat then teamed up with South Korea's Kim Sa Rang to put Petaling Jaya 8-6 ahead with a 11-7, 4-11, 11-6, 11-9 win against Chen Tang-Jie-Goh V Shem.
But the joy was shortlived as Zhao Yunlei-Riky Widianto cruised past Lim Chiew Sien-Shin Baek Cheol 11-2, 11-8, 9-11, 11-2.
And when it mattered most, Giap Chin rose to the ocassion to seal victory for Petaling Jaya, who will now be aiming to go one better after finishing runner-up twice in the previous two editions.
Petaling Jaya BC will take on second seeds Bandar Utama Dragons BC for a place in the final today.
