The 2011 and 2013 live-action Smurfs films were flops despite Neil Patrick Harris headlining them.

Thankfully, Hollywood has come to its senses and is now making a fully-animated Smurfs feature instead. The storyline follows the 1980s cartoon series, too, in which the Smurfs get themselves into all sorts of trouble.

In Smurfs: The Lost Village, Smurfette (featuring the voice of Demi Lovato) is convinced there are more smurfs out there after she finds a mysterious map. When Papa Smurf (Mandy Patinkin) forbids her to venture into the Forbidden Forest to track down these other smurfs, Smurfette recruits her best friends, Brainy (Danny Pudi), Clumsy (Jack McBrayer) and Hefty (Joe Manganiello) for help.

In an interview transcript from Sony Pictures, singer-actress Lovato said: “What I really appreciated in this film is that I got to play a strong female lead. To play someone who is brave, driven, passionate and curious was really cool. I don’t attach my name with anything that I don’t believe in. And, so, this was something that was easy to say yes to.”

Smurfs: The Lost Village opens on April 6.
