Bruno Mars’ 24K In Bahasa Malaysia Is Less Cool But More LOL-Worthy

Bruno Mars’ 24K In Bahasa Malaysia Is Less Cool But More LOL-Worthy - What happens when you translate English songs into Bahasa Malaysia? Well, you get atrocious lyrics such as “dua puluh empat lobak magik di udara*”, “kau boleh simpan berus gigi di tempat ku**” or “tarik cadar dari sudut***”.

Yeah, they sound pretty ridiculous but whaddaya know, the fellas at MGAG sure know how to make it work.

Their video, Hit Songs In Bahasa Malaysia, posted on MGAG’s Facebook page on March 30, garnered over 800,000 views in just 17 hours! *happy clap*

MGAG is the Malaysian branch of the highly popular SGAG from Singapore. It produces contents that … well, hopefully make people laugh.

MGAG country manager Lau Mun Yee (featured in the video singing Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You … or should we say Bentuk Kau?) says that they are happy to put a smile on Malaysians’ faces on a Friday, because that would hopefully lead to an awesome weekend. Aww … how sweet.

“MGAG publishes a new video every day. We create contents that are relevant to Malaysians, and we thought that this video would speak to everyone,” says Lau.

The 3-minute (and 30 seconds, if we are being really particular) video also features English to BM songs like Bruno Mars’ Grenade, The Weeknd’s Starboy, Maroon 5’s Sugar and Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On.

Even funnier than the translated lyrics are the expressions of the “singers” who put their heart and soul into making the song sound believable. Do check out the Raja Bomoh impersonation in one of the clips, it’s quite LOL-worthy.

The MGAG crew includes video lead Andrew Soh (who sings the BM version of The Chainsmoker’s Closer) and content strategist Adzrin Mansor (who sings the BM version of Coldplay’s Fix You).

It took about a week for the team to conceptualise the idea – from translating the lyrics, and working on the pre and post video production.

“Everything was done using in-house talents. We don’t have any budget, so we just used what we could for the props and costumes,” adds Lau.

The team just hopes that it wouldn’t get into any copyright issues as they have used the original background music.

“We don’t know how this works. Hopefully they won’t take our video down, but I’d like to also point out that we have identified the original song titles and singers in the video.”

* “24 karat magic in the air” (24K Magic, Bruno Mars)

** “You could leave a toothbrush at my place” (Toothbrush, DNCE)

*** “Pull the sheets right off the corner” (Closer, The Chainsmokers)
