Soon Huat-Shevon Stun Thai World No. 7 For A Second Time - Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie have done it again.
A week ago, they claimed their biggest scalp when they beat world No. 7 Dechapol Puavara-nukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand in the semi-finals of the Thailand Open.
The pair, who climbed to a career-high No. 24 in the world following their runner-up finish in Bangkok, proved that the win was no fluke when they stunned Dechapol-Sapsiree once again – this time in the first round of the Indonesian Open in Jakarta.
The national No. 3 oozed confidence as they put the eighth-seeded Thais to the sword for a 21-16, 15-21, 21-13 win at the Jakarta Convention Centre yesterday.
The win has strengthened Soon Huat-Shevon’s reputation as gold medal contenders for the KL SEA Games in August.
Soon Huat-Shevon will face world No. 37 Lu Ching-yao-Chiang Kai-hsin of Taiwan in the second round.
National No. 2 and World Championships-bound Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing also got off to a flying start – beating Taiwan’s Lee Yang-Hsu Ya-ching 21-14, 22-20.
The world No. 11, who are looking to reach a Superseries final for the first time, will meet Indonesian qualifiers Fachryza Abimanyu-Bunga Fitriani Romadhini for a place in the quarter-finals.
The Indonesians were lucky to earn a place in the second round after their opponents – world No. 3 Zhang Nan-Li Yinhui of China – withdrew at the 11th hour.
“We made a few mistakes in the second game but overall it was a good start for us,” said Pei Jing.
“The chance to play at the world meet (in Glasgow, Scotland, in August) has definitely fired as up. We’ve got a really good chance to reach the quarter-finals here. We really need to take our chances.
“But it’s also important that we don’t put too much pressure on ourselves.”
Malaysia’s third mixed doubles pair – the scratch combination of Chan Peng Soon-Peck Yen Wei – also enjoyed a dream debut when they stunned world No. 27 Ronald Ronald-Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia 21-18, 21-18.
Peng Soon-Yen Wei will meet second seeds Lu Kai-Huang Yaqiong of China next.
In the women’s singles, national No. 1 Soniia Cheah defeated Taiwan’s Chiang Mei-hui 21-18, 21-11 to set up a second-round clash against second seed Carolina Marin of Spain.
Former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei, however, crashed out after losing 22-24, 19-21 to Taiwan’s Lee Chia-hsin.
