Norza: BAM Will Accept Whatever Chong Wei Decides - Lee Chong Wei’s first-round loss at the World Badminton Championships has elicited lots of reactions on the social media – with many saying that it was time for him to retire.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria (pic), however, hopes that Chong Wei will take his time and clear his head before making a decision following the 19-21, 24-22, 17-21 defeat to Brice Leverdez of France on Tuesday.
Norza said that he would hold a discussion with the 34-year-old Chong Wei and coach Datuk Misbun Sidek soon but “I will accept any decision Chong Wei makes regarding his badminton future”.
“I’ve received many text messages asking what’s next for Chong Wei following this shocking defeat,” said Norza.
“We’re disappointed, but he’s taking it even more badly. I spoke to him and told him to calm down.
“Losing is part and parcel of the game.
“Chong Wei is our badminton legend and is one of the greatest players we’ve produced.
“We’re all grateful for everything that he has achieved for so long.
“I don’t want him to make any hasty decisions.
“We’ll wait for the team to return and review what went wrong and look forward.
“We’ll not force Chong Wei but accept any decision he makes,” added Norza, who has also contacted Misbun for an explanation on the shuttler’s defeat.
