Metallica Fans In Malaysia Band Together For MetalliCarnival - If you want to celebrate Metallica, you best go big and loud.
There can be no accusing the Malaysian Magnetic #449 community of not pushing the fan club experience to the next level. As an official chapter of the Metallica fan club, Malaysian Magnetic is set to present its inaugural MetalliCarnival at the Black Box in Publika, Kuala Lumpur on Sept 17.
“Malaysian Magnetic, which was formed in 2014, is slowly coming into its own as one of the busiest Metallica fan club chapters around,” says Mohd Hazri (Ayie), 37, a Malaysian Magnetic committee member. “The fact that the Metallica official website is endorsing the MetalliCarnival is a big boost.”
The event will feature a diverse array of programming including a fan art exhibition, a screening of Metallica’s Through The Never film, a tribute gig, a Malaysian-made video presentation of local Metallica fan experiences, and a vintage merchandise and poster exhibition.
The San Francisco-based Met Club, a long-standing international Metallica fan club, has also come forward to loan concert material and assorted paraphernalia for the festival.
“The Met Club has been totally supportive,” says Ayie. “It has shipped over set lists, posters, official guitar picks, floor plans, and other assorted concert-related material to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at a Metallica concert.”
Ayie also mentions that Metallica in Malaysian pop culture will be an important element. “There’s no shortage of Metallica magazines from abroad. But it’s cool when you can present magazines like Ujang and ROTTW, which capture the local angle when it comes to the band,” he says.
The carnival will feature three tribute bands from Malaysia including Maxxxter, The Ironman Band and Distorted Outlaws. They will be joined on stage by The Boys (Indonesia) and Agt (Singapore).
“We have five bands to take the MetalliCarnival home. You can expect time-tested favourites and deep cuts from them,” says Ayie. “Let’s not forget fan club members from Indonesia For All #395 (Indonesia) and Singatarium #442 (Singapore), who will be in town to give this event a regional edge.”
“Just too bad we couldn’t convince (Indonesian President) Joko Widodo to loan us the bass guitar gifted to him by Metallica’s Robert Trujillo in Jakarta in 2013,” he adds with a laugh. “I think that famous bass guitar has been taken in by the authorities there and auctioned off!”
