Platform To Promote Malaysian Artists - THE 11th Art Expo Malaysia proved to be a success as it attracted almost 30,000 visitors to the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
The longest-running art fair in South-East Asia featured over 2,000 artworks that included paintings, sculptures, installations and photographs by 70 established art galleries and art collectives from across the globe.
At the opening ceremony, International Trade and Industry Minister II Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan urged Malaysian artists to explore overseas markets as there were huge opportunities, despite the competition.
“In 2016, Malaysia’s art exports was RM3.3mil as compared to RM1.8mil in 2012. We hope to see a 10% to 15% growth this year,” he said.
Art Expo Malaysia executive director Sim Pojinn said the expo was an international platform to promote Malaysian art, galleries and artists.
“It also educates the public about art appreciation and investment, which helps strengthen Kuala Lumpur as an important art hub in the region that’s active in art commerce and development,” he said.
One of the highlights of the expo was Kim Il Tae’s mixed 24k gold and oil on canvas. Saged Assets Sdn Bhd founder and managing director Michael Teh believes that Kim’s artwork would appeal to art collectors as an eastern oriental theme with gold elements has been incorporated.
“It’s an asset that can be passed down to generations, and Kim could be known as a pioneer of a new genre of art,” said Teh.
