TripAdvisor Will Now Display Warnings For Unsafe Hotels - TripAdvisor has introduced a new warning for hotels at which there may be safety or health risks.
The aim of the new initiative is to make travellers aware of any such problems, the company said when reached for comment.
The warnings will also be shown when a hotel is the subject of allegations of discrimination.
The warning notification for these hotels states: “TripAdvisor has been made aware of recent media reports or events concerning this property which may not be reflected in reviews found on this listing. Accordingly, you may wish to perform additional research for information about this property when making your travel plans.”
The move comes after media in the United States reported that TripAdvisor had been accused of deleting user comments that alleged sexual assault at particular hotels in Mexico.
“In light of these incidents, we have decided to provide some hotels in Mexico with this new notification,” said a spokeswoman for TripAdvisor in Germany.
The company had been working on developing such a notification for several months, and if it shows up on a hotel’s page on the site, it can stay online for up to three months.
TripAdvisor has for years shown red warnings for instances when a hotel is under clear suspicion of manipulating reviews for a better overall rating.
According to its own data, TripAdvisor features more than 535 million reviews from users on hotels, restaurants, attractions and airlines.
