‘A House Of Happiness’ Earns RM1mil In Opening Week At Malaysian Box Office

‘A House Of Happiness’ Earns RM1mil In Opening Week At Malaysian Box Office - A House Of Happiness has grossed more than RM1mil at the Malaysian box office after only a week of release.

The local Chinese language radio station 988 had debuted its first full length feature film in 88 Malaysian cinemas on the eve of Chinese New Year. This heartwarming family comedy is helmed by new director JY Teng.

The cast is led by veteran Hong Kong funnyman Richard Ng, and Ipoh-born Hong Kong-based comedian Mimi Chu who light up the silver screen as a boisterous old couple who spend all day squabbling about petty matters. Ng plays Uncle Shui, a elderly ice-cream seller who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, while Chu plays Aunt Ha, his long-suffering wife.

Supporting acts include Malaysian actors Steve Yap, Lim Ching Miau, Thian Siew Kim, Louisa Chong, Ong Tee Chuan, and 988 deejays Chan Fong, Cheryl Lee, Sam Mak, Hau Min, Anson Kow, Jason Poon, Cassey Soo, Cynthia Tan, Sean Lee, Piao Min and Danny One.

The movie is also said to be breathing new life into the location where it was shot, namely the Batu Arang Heritage Town, which was well-known as a bustling coal mining town more than 100 years ago.

The Chinese New Year screening slot is traditionally the most lucrative at Asian cinemas but local films often face stiff competition from international releases. Yet, thanks to rave reviews from local movie enthusiasts, The House Of Happiness has been doing well at the Malaysian box office.

Moviegoers have also been leaving favourable comments on social media platforms commending the radio deejays on their big screen debut. Many have pointed out that they can easily identify with the family issues of misunderstandings between father and son, as well as dementia creating a rift in the relationship between husband and wife.

The movie is jointly presented by Be World Class Management, HK Media and 988, produced by Lomo Pictures Sdn Bhd and sponsored by Gamuda Land. Visit 988.com.my or facebook.com/988.my for details. 988 is part of the Star Media Radio Group.

A House Of Happiness is currently screening at cinemas nationwide. The movie has also secured a release date in China (tentatively March 3).
