What To Do At The Klang Heritage Walk In Klang

What To Do At The Klang Heritage Walk In Klang - Nine historic sites in the oldest part of the royal town of Klang in Selangor are covered in the Klang Heritage Walk, a free guided walking tour. For the uninitiated, Klang is known for producing tin as early as the 15th century.

Today, the town still retains that historical vibe while moving with the times – all which can be seen as you journey through its heritage sites.

The nearly three-hour tour kicks off at 9am from The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery every Saturday and Sunday. While walk-ins are welcome, participants are encouraged to register with Tourism Selangor – joint organisers of these tours with the Klang Municipal Council.

Why you should go

As one of the oldest towns in Malaysia, Klang oozes plenty of history, tradition and custom. This translates to beautifully dated architecture that pepper this walk.

While renovations have been made to cater to commercial demands, much of the building has been carefully preserved to uphold its century-old legacy.

The fact that the walk is facilitated by tourist guides means that you will hear interesting stories and bits of trivia about Klang as well as the people who populate the town. Participants are also granted special entry to off-limits places such as the Royal Klang Club and Sri Nagara Thendayuthapani temple.

What to do

Ample explanation are provided about the foundation of Selangor’s monarchy at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery. For shutterbugs, the Neo-classical building of the former Chartered Bank (which the younger generation will know as the Standard Chartered Bank) will make a great addition in your photo album.

The venue today houses a shop called Chennai Silk and offers visitors a chance to shop for colourful silk sarees and brassware.

Be sure to sample some Malaysian delicacies when the walk reaches Little India. Lots of snacks and sweets can be found along the rows of narrow antiquated shop houses.

Seasoned structures aside, immerse yourself in the strong sense of community spirit in Klang along the trail. At the Victorian-styled Klang Fire Station, the local firemen have taken the initiative to set up a mini gallery in support of the heritage walk.

Who will like it

History buffs will appreciate learning about the town’s history. For those who follow newspaper headlines, the gothic-styled Church of Our Lady of Lourdes on Jalan Tengku Kelana will be a familiar sight. The religious institution holds the famous glass panel bearing the purported image of the Virgin Mary that made headlines back in 2012.

If royal families fascinate you, the walk will also make a stop outside the gates of Istana Alam Shah (the official palace of the Sultan of Selangor).

How to get there

For those who wish to drive there, just key in “Royal Gallery Sultan Abdul Aziz” in your navigation system. Parking is available within the grounds of the gallery.

Alternatively, you can also travel by the KTM Komuter train. Just get off at Klang Station and walk about 100m to the Royal Gallery, the meeting point.
