A Wintry ‘Summer’ In Gold Coast

A Wintry ‘Summer’ In Gold Coast - While generally blessed with sun and showers year round, one of the chief complaints about Malaysian weather is that it’s either: a.) too hot or b.) too wet.

And as we gear up for the drier months ahead, it’s best to sort out a respite from the sweltering heat

all the more so now that the school holidays are near.

So round up the kids, pack up your sunnies, and embrace the cooler side of the hemisphere by visiting Gold Coast, Australia. Known for its active lifestyles and adrenaline-packed adventures, winter in Gold Coast presents a truly one of a kind experience for the whole family.

A fine weather affair

Contrary to what you might think, winter in Gold Coast is surprisingly pleasant

pleasant enough that you don’t have to actually lug around your thick winter clothing. Temperatures hover between 21.5°C during daytime and drops to about 12.5°C at night.

If you’re afraid your kids or your elderly might have the sniffles, fret not as there’s little fluctuation of temperature in the day that could affect that. Weather-wise, it is typically dry so expect sunny blue skies minus all the worries (and the sweat) that would dampen your trip.

“Maybe he only speaks whale”

Come winter time, catch the spectacle of whale migration as they swim across the ocean from the cold feeding grounds of Antarctica to the warmer waters of Australia.

Whale watching season in Queensland starts from June up till October and there’s no better place to witness this natural phenomenon than in Gold Coast. It is the prime location for whale watching as whales of the humpback kind generally come quite close to the shore – within a kilometer or two off shore.

Also, because of its geographical location, Gold Coast has whales passing through it all season with tour companies such as Whales in Paradise even guaranteeing 100% whale sightings. You might even catch a glimpse of the famous Migaloo, the all-white humpback whale.

Family farm stay

A two-hour drive away from Gold Coast lies the gorgeous hinterland of the Scenic Rim. Dotted with lush greenery and rolling mountain ranges, it’s the perfect travel destination to disconnect from city life and reconnect with nature.

While there, opt to stay in a rustic farmhouse at the Cedar Glen Farmstay and experience living in a working farm – think horse riding, fishing and boomerang throwing.

Or visit Worendo Farm, a family-friendly accommodation set within the wilderness of Lost World Valley. Kids will be kept occupied for sure during their stay with free activities such as kayaking, ziplining, and interacting with wild creatures.

Channel your inner Steve Irwin

Crikey! Embody the spirit of the late and great Crocodile Hunter by visiting the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, you can get up close to the kangaroos and cuddle a koala. With so many activities lined up, we suggest you spend at least half a day here.

Start the day by going to the lorikeet feeding happening at 8am and 4pm daily. Then, head on over for the Pelican and Eel show at 9.30am before wrapping things up at the Free Flight Bird Show by midday. Marvel at the beauty of these majestic raptors as they glide freely across the audience.

While at it, grab the opportunity to snap a few family pics with a koala. Queensland is one of the only two states in Australia where you can have this opportunity.

Feast on fish

Drop by the home of the largest fresh seafood supply on the Gold Coast – Charis Seafood – and gorge on scrumptious seafood selections. Located at Harley Park, the family-run establishment offers a range of cooked and fresh fish, calamari, lobster, and prepared platters.

Don’t miss the pelican feeding on the Broadwater, taking place daily at 1.30pm. Have your camera ready for the perfect Instagram snaps as there will be a squadron of pelicans lined up for their feed.

Visit the world’s third largest sand island – Moreton Island!

If you’re looking for an island adventure around Gold Coast, then Tangalooma Island Resort has got you covered. Situated on the sandy Moreton Island, try your hand at adventurous activities such as sand tobogganing (sand boarding), ATV adventure, snorkeling and even wild dolphin feeding.

Fitted with all the necessary mod cons, spend a night or two on the island resort to fully enjoy the facilities. This is one well appointed resort where young and old can choose to either get rough and sandy, or just relaxed by the beach.

Can’t wait to start your break? Book your flight today and head on over to Gold Coast for a fun-filled family vacation.
