Cagers Meet Prince Charles But Fail To Advance - A CHANCE meeting with Prince Charles was not enough to salvage the Malaysian women’s basketball team’s hopes of making the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games.
The Prince of Wales was a guest at the Cairns Convention Centre to watch the New Zealand women’s team in action against India.
And the Malaysians were fortunate enough to have a photo opportunity with the prince before their crunch match against Jamaica in Group B.
“The prince came to watch the New Zealand game and we happened to be at the entrance of the stadium,” said team manager Ang Boon Chin.
“We were lucky enough to have a photo with him and he also apologised for not staying to watch our game.”
Unfortunately, the SEA Games gold medallists could not rise to the occasion as they lost 81-58 in a must-win tie against the Carribean nation.
Malaysia started well and kept pace with the taller and bigger Jamaicans to tie 21-all in the first quarter.
But they were slowly worn down and went cold from range as Jamaica stepped up their game.
Forward Eugene Ting led the scoring with 17 points while captain Nur Izzati Yaakob and Yap Fook Yee had 10 points each.
For Jamaica, Jennifer George top scored with 25 points followed by Shenneika Smith with 20.
The defeat means Malaysia finished third in Group B and will instead fight for fifth-eight placing.
