Peter Cetera To Perform In Malaysia This September

Peter Cetera To Perform In Malaysia This September - Peter Cetera clearly loves Malaysia. We can see why – we’re a hard habit to break. Still, it’s hard for us to say sorry, especially when Cetera decides to stay the night.

The former lead singer of Chicago will be returning for a show at the Mega Star Arena, Kuala Lumpur on Sept 6, 8pm.

It is part of Cetera’s South-East Asia tour, which also features Manila in the Philippines and Singapore.

Cetera was previously here for the David Foster & Friends Asia Tour 2015 concert in Genting, but this time around, the stage will be all his as he delivers an intimate show accompanied by a seven-piece band.

The 72-year-old was the lead singer for Chicago from 1968 to 1985, and is the voice behind many of the band’s greatest hits, including Hard To Say I’m Sorry, Love Me Tomorrow, Stay The Night, Hard Habit To Break and You’re The Inspiration.

Cetera also enjoyed a fruitful solo career after leaving Chicago in 1985 – though his debut solo album, 1981’s Peter Cetera, flopped. But the follow-up, Solitude/Solitaire produced two No. 1 singles – The Next Time I Fall, a duet with Amy Grant, and Glory Of Love.

Featured on the soundtrack for The Karate Kid II, Glory Of Love topped the US Billboard Top 100 chart for two weeks in 1986.

The song also got Cetera nominations for Best Pop Vocal Performance (Male) at the 1987 Grammy Awards and Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.

Tickets for his Malaysian concert are priced from RM350 and are available at www.AsiaBoxOffice.com.

Your Best D-fence?

Your Best D-fence? - Vitamin D isn’t just vital for strong bones, but many body systems, including the immune system.

Researchers of yesteryears had the notion that vitamin D receptors were only located in certain areas of the body such as the bones, intestines and kidney.

Little did they know back then that vitamin D receptors are actually found in all parts of the body. We can thus make the conclusion that vitamin D is useful throughout the body; from strengthening the immune system to controlling cell growth.

There are more than 30,000 genes in the body, and vitamin D regulates more than 3,000 of them. The fact that every tissue in the body, including the brain, heart, breast, muscle and immune system, have receptors for vitamin D means that it is needed at optimal levels for these tissues to function well.

Influenza and vitamin D

Some studies have linked the body’s level of vitamin D and the risk of developing influenza. Those who have low vitamin D levels may have an increased risk of developing influenza.

There are vitamin D receptors found on cells in the immune system. Vitamin D works in the immune system by reducing levels of inflammatory proteins called cytokines, as well as increasing the number of antimicrobial proteins, which are naturally occurring antibiotics that destroy invading bacteria and viruses.

This combination of lowering inflammation and increasing antimicrobial defence can help an individual’s immune system fight infections more effectively.

These actions also reduce the risk of pneumonia, which is the primary complication of influenza.

Japanese researchers reported that daily supplementation of vitamin D3 reduces the risk of influenza A by over 40%.

Another study found that people who maintained normal or optimal levels of vitamin D levels developed fewer viral infections, including influenza, and were sick for fewer days than participants with lower levels of vitamin D levels (PloSONE, June 14, 2010).

Knowing the importance of vitamin D to our overall health begets our next question – where and how do we get vitamin D?

Sources of vitamin D3

The body makes vitamin D3 upon exposure to UV rays from sunlight. The amount of vitamin D3 made when the skin is exposed to sunlight depends on multiple factors such as age and skin colour, to how much of the skin is exposed, time of the day and which part of the world we live in.

Even cloud cover or the presence of haze affects vitamin D3 production.

Sunscreens also block some UV rays, which reduces the skin’s ability to produce vitamin D3. A mere SPF-8 sunscreen cuts off vitamin D3 production by 90%, whilst an SPF-30 cuts off a staggering 99%.

Hence, living in tropical sunny Malaysia does not mean that we are getting enough of this sunshine nutrient.

According to the US-based Vitamin D Council, a non-profit organisation responsible for disseminating accurate information on vitamin D, it is estimated that a third to half of the world’s population are vitamin D deficient.

Most white collar workers (i.e. professionals, managers, administrative staff) suffer in this aspect, as they spend all day in their offices.

Most people have the notion that they can get enough vitamin D from their diet, but according to a well-known professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics at Boston University Medical Center in the US, Dr Michael F Holick, it is virtually impossible to obtain an adequate amount of vitamin D from our diets.

He notes that more fortified food and beverages are likely to emerge in the market to fill the gap.

Few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D, so the main dietary sources of vitamin D are fortified foods. Good sources include fortified milk and cereal.

Natural sources of vitamin D include fatty fish such as mackerel, with smaller amounts in egg yolks and certain mushrooms.

Since there is difficulty obtaining sufficient levels of vitamin D through food or exposure to the sun, most nutritionists recommend taking vitamin D3 as a supplement.

Your Best D-fence?

There are two forms of vitamin D used in supplements. When choosing vitamin D supplements, its best to choose a supplement made with natural vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) rather than D2 (ergocalciferol), which is made from fungi (yeast or mushrooms) upon exposure to UV light.

There is evidence that the body has a preference for D3 over D2, with more studies confirming that the body more readily uses D3 when both are in the body.

Point to note, whichever form you consume, your body will still have to convert it to the active form, and vitamin D3 gets converted five times faster than vitamin D2.

How much do you need

In 2010, the IOM (Institute of Medicine, US) proposed that the current RDA for vitamin D3 be increased from 400 International Units (i.u.) to 600 i.u. for children and adults up to 70 years of age, and 800 i.u. for those over 70.

Even this amount is way too low, according to the IOS (International Orthomolecular Society) in Canada, an organisation that specialises in researching nutritional medicine.

They reported that vitamin D level recommendations by the US government are way too low to prevent some basic health problems. This organisation, made up of medical doctors, is one of the most credible sources for information on nutritional medicine.

According to the International Orthomolecular Society, 2,000 i.u./day of vitamin D or more is needed for optimal health.

The Canadian Paediatric Society’s 2007 guidelines dosage recommendation is much higher at 2,000 i.u. a day. The safety limit for vitamin D3 is much higher than commonly believed.

Based on the latest evidence, it is determined that 10,000 i.u. a day is non-toxic. After all, your body makes 20,000 i.u. after 30 minutes at the beach between 10am and 2pm.

Published cases of toxicity, for which serum levels and doses are known, all involve intake levels of over 40,000 i.u. per day.

Many health experts recommend 1,000–2,000 i.u. of vitamin D3 daily.

So, remember that sensible sun exposure has countless health benefits, including improving immune health. Overall, the evidence suggests the benefits of sensible sun exposure outweigh the risks while maximising benefits of UV exposure.

Review: Atomic Blonde

Review: Atomic Blonde - Who doesn’t like a good old-fashioned, no-frills, spy-thriller that also doubles up as a no-holds-barred action movie? Throw in Charlize Theron (who seems to be going on an action movie spree of late) as the butt-kicking platinum blonde superspy lead character, and you’ve got a movie that’s bound to go, well, atomic.

Based on Antony Johnston and Sam Hart’s 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City, Atomic Blonde is set in 1989 on the eve of the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

British MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is sent to Berlin to retrieve a list that could compromise and expose secret agents from both sides of the Cold War conflict.

Her contact is the reckless and slightly unhinged Berlin station chief David Percival (James McAvoy), who has spent so much time in the city that he has “gone native”.

Together, they have to contend with Russian agents, German mobsters, an elusive and mysterious double agent named Satchel and a city that is a burning powder keg about to explode.

This is a movie where the action rules. When things quiet down, it starts to get a little awkward.

The relentless action bears comparison with the John Wick films (Atomic Blonde director David Leitch had a hand in directing the first one), but the story and script just aren’t strong (or self-aware) enough to sustain a prolonged period of inaction the way that Keanu Reeves franchise does.

Despite the numerous double- and triple-crosses, the central plot is a little too flimsy to sustain its almost two-hour runtime.

Then again, you probably won’t be watching Atomic Blonde for its story, would you?

Review: Atomic Blonde

Theron is no stranger to action movies, of course, having played the titular female hero in sci-fi actioner Aeon Flux in 2005, Furiousa in Mad Max: Fury Road and the villain in this year’s Fast And Furious 8.

Here, she ups the action ante, mixing three parts James Bond, six parts John Wick, one part Furiousa, and shaking up one sexy, smooth and suitably deadly Lorraine Molotov cocktail.

From a slickly choreographed fight in which she uses a rope to get the upper hand over her attackers and swing down to safety to a bloody, brutal, bruising battle near the end, the action sequences seem to get progressively more violent and unrestrained as the movie goes along, and Theron gamely plows through each and every one of them.

Theron aside, McAvoy manages to steal a little bit of the limelight as the sleazy but cunning Percival. But other supporting characters – Sofia Boutella’s Delphine included – are less interesting.

You might even struggle to figure out what the names of the villains are, as everything just blurs into one long continuous fight scene.

Still, who cares, really? The villains are just fodder for the Atomic Blonde Cannon that is Lorraine Broughton. And that’s all you should be expecting from this movie anyway.

A Vacation Will Be More Expensive In 2018

A Vacation Will Be More Expensive In 2018 - If you’re planning a big trip in 2018 you might want to start saving up now, as the findings of a new report predict that travel prices will rise sharply across air, hotel and ground transportation next year.

The reason – a stronger global economy, higher oil prices and rising demand from emerging markets, say analysts in the 2018 Global Travel Forecast, released jointly by global travel management company Carlson Wagonlit Travel, and The Global Business Travel Association Foundation.

“The higher pricing is a reflection of the stronger economy and growing demand,” said Carlson Wagonlit president and CEO Kurt Ekert in a statement.

“The global numbers from this forecast should be considered strong leading indicators of what 2018 will mean for global businesses, as we anticipate higher spending.”

The sector that will see the biggest global increase is hotels, with average prices forecast to rise nearly 4%. In Western Europe that figure is expected to spike 6%, led notably by Norway, where hotel rates will increase 14% .

There is good news, however, for travellers headed to countries in Eastern Europe, as prices are predicted to drop nearly 7% in that region.

When it comes to flights, travellers will likewise shell out more next year, with rising crude oil prices expected to drive up the cost of global airfares by 3.5%.

And what travellers bound for Eastern Europe save on hotel prices, they’ll likely spend on increased airfare, with prices forecast to rise 7%.

Likewise, travel to Western Europe will also be about 6% more expensive.

Airfares for North America, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa will see modest rises of about 2 to 3%, while prices for travel to Latin America and the Caribbean will stay stagnant.

And while global prices for ground transportation are expected to rise slightly to 1%, that figure shoots up to nearly 5% for Canada.

How To Tell Someone That You’re Sick And May Die

How To Tell Someone That You’re Sick And May Die - You’ve recently been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.

Should you share the news with friends and family, or is it better to withhold that information to avoid causing pain?

If you know you are going to need their support, you have to share the news; if you prefer to go it alone, then keep it private.

Dr Lucy Hone, author of Resilient Grieving, finds it helpful to ask, “Will this help or harm me?”

Will telling other people help me tackle the challenge ahead, or will it interfere with that process?

Should you decide to share the news, feel free to do so in the way that works best for you.

Dr Hone also suggests you tell them exactly what you need from them.

Asking for support and help

If you want to talk it through, ask them to go for a walk or meet for a coffee.

If you need practical support to get to medical appointments, someone to house-sit, pick up the kids, cook meals or feed the dogs, go ahead and suggest what would be helpful for you, she adds.

Say something early

According to Dr Alan Wolfelt, director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition in the US and author of Grief One Day at a Time, you should tell those closest to you early on.

If something’s weighing on you, they’ll sense it. They should know what you’re struggling with.

They also deserve the chance to support you, and you deserve their support.

Remember that relationships are built on mutual trust and communication.

Being open and honest about challenges is part of the deal.

Let them cope

“I often say that people can cope with what they know. They can’t cope with what they don’t know. Ultimately, feeling lied to can be more painful than the timely truth,” says Dr Wolfelt.

This goes for children as well. Explain what’s happening in language they’ll understand. Younger children may only need a few words of explanation. Let their questions guide you from there.

Dr Wolfelt advises that with more casual friends and distant family, it’s appropriate to share or not on a case-by-case basis.

Keep in mind that your close friends and family may need support from their networks too, so the news might naturally spread. That’s OK. The more people express their normal and necessary feelings, the better.

Trump Replaces Chief Of Staff Priebus With Retired General Kelly

Trump Replaces Chief Of Staff Priebus With Retired General Kelly - President Donald Trump replaced his beleaguered White House chief of staff, Reince Priebus, after only six months on the job on Friday, installing retired General John Kelly in his place in a major shake-up of his top team.

Trump announced the move in a tweet a day after his new communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, accused Priebus of leaking information to reporters in a profanity-laced tirade.

Kelly, 67, a retired four-star Marine Corps general, is currently secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and will assume the chief of staff post on Monday. He was hired with the goal of bringing more discipline to the White House, a senior White House official said.

Trump issued his decision just as he landed aboard Air Force One after a visit to Long Island and hours after Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare failed in the Senate.

Priebus was on the plane with the Republican president and made no comment. Reporters had noticed no sign of stress from Priebus during the day.Priebus told CNN he had been talking to Trump for some time about exiting the White House, and is the latest in a long line of officials to leave or not take a job at the White House.

"The president has a right to hit a reset button. I think it's time to hit the reset button," Priebus said in a televised interview from the White House. "He intuitively determined that it was time to do something different, and I think he's right."

Trump had lost confidence in Priebus, privately questioning his competence after major legislative items failed to pass the U.S. Congress, a Trump confidant said.

A source close to Priebus said the former Republican National Committee chairman turned in his resignation on Thursday night, after Scaramucci's rant against him was published by the New Yorker magazine.

A senior White House official said Trump had informed Priebus two weeks ago that he would be replacing him and that the move had no connection to Scaramucci, whose hiring a week ago prompted Sean Spicer, a Priebus ally, to abruptly resign as press secretary.

After frequent conversations with Kelly, Trump recently warmed up to the idea of naming Kelly chief of staff to more effectively manage personnel and offered it to him earlier this week, a senior White House official said.

KELLY 'A STAR'

Carrying an umbrella, Trump approached reporters as he stepped off Air Force One, with rain storming down.

"Reince is a good man. John Kelly will do a fantastic job. General Kelly has been a star, done an incredible job thus far, respected by everybody. He's a great, great American. Reince is a good man," Trump said.

Priebus' 189-day tenure was the shortest in modern history for a White House chief of staff. He had hoped to stay on at least a year but struggled to manage his unpredictable boss and was unable to get a handle on conflicting factions in the White House who have frequently squabbled.

In a statement, Priebus said it had been one of the great honours of his life to serve Trump and the country.

"I will continue to serve as a strong supporter of the president's agenda and policies. I can't think of a better person than General John Kelly to succeed me and I wish him God's blessings and great success," he said.

Trump loyalists had chafed at Priebus, feeling he had installed his RNC allies at the White House and overlooked the people close to Trump who helped get him elected president in November.

But Priebus allies felt he was an important link to establishment Republicans in Washington as the capital attempted to adjust to the anti-establishment style of the president.

"He has served the president and the American people capably and passionately," House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said of his close friend in a statement. "He has achieved so much, and he has done it all with class. I could not be more proud to call Reince a dear friend."

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said she did not think Priebus' exit would affect the White House's relationship with the Republican Party.

"I think we've still got a good relationship. We're going to continue working with the party and doing what we came here to do," she said.

Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Elaine Duke will become the acting chief of the department on Monday, DHS said in a statement.

U.S. Representative Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, is among those being considered for Homeland Security secretary, a DHS official said.

I’m (still) Batman: Ben Affleck Denies Being Dropped

I’m (still) Batman: Ben Affleck Denies Being Dropped - Ben Affleck dismissed speculation that he is being dropped as Batman during a Warner Bros presentation that introduced the Justice League and announced a sequel to summer smash hit Wonder Woman.

Rumours have been swirling in the US entertainment press that the studio was casting around for a replacement for 44-year-old Affleck to lead a standalone Batman franchise.

“Let me be very clear – I am the luckiest guy in the world,” Affleck told a crowd of 6,000 cheering fans at San Diego Comic-Con.

“Batman is the coolest… part in any universe, DC, Marvel, it’s incredible. I’m so thrilled to do it.”

He said that after two appearances as Batman in Warner’s DC Comics Extended Universe (DCEU), studio bosses Kevin Tsujihara, Sue Kroll and Toby Emmerich had made it clear the part would remain his.

“I believe them,” Affleck said, adding that he would be “an ape on the ground” for Matt Reeves, who is set to direct The Batman after scoring a hit with War For The Planet Of The Apes.

Affleck will don the cape and cowl in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which opens in November. He shared the Hall H stage at Comic-Con with co-stars Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ezra Miller (The Flash) and Ray Fisher (Cyborg).

Fans were treated to the most extensive footage yet of the fifth film in the DCEU, which was handed to Joss Whedon after photography had been completed when Snyder’s 20-year-old daughter died in March.

The four-minute reel featured Wonder Woman rescuing children from a robbery and then teaming up with Batman to recruit Aquaman, the Flash and Cyborg to a new crime-fighting unit.

Wonder Woman sequel

The ensemble cast is supported by Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons and J. K. Simmons for the movie, which hits theatres on Nov 17.

The least surprising announcement during the presentation was that a sequel to the standalone Wonder Woman is in the works, with Gadot slated to reprise her role as Diana Prince.

No release date or plot details were revealed, but the confirmation was seen as inevitable as the fantasy adventure is most the profitable movie yet from the DC Extended Universe.

Patty Jenkins’s superhero epic, which has taken US$767.7mil (RM3.301bil) worldwide, is also set to become the biggest summer blockbuster – and is already the largest grossing live action movie ever directed by a woman.

“This character is just so incredible. She stands for everything that is good – for love, compassion, for truth, justice and peace. There’s nothing not to love about her,” said Gadot.

The studio also announced standalone Batgirl film, a sequel to Suicide Squad and numerous other DC superhero movies.

It was a lively panel during which Momoa – who had flown in from the set of Aquaman in Australia only the night before – jokingly threw away his chair, breaking it and finding himself forced temporarily to sit on the floor.

The studio offered a short teaser for Aquaman after Momoa ran on stage, trident in hand, to a soundtrack of Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Chile.

“We can’t say too much. We’re a ways away, but we made something very, very special,” Momoa told the crowd before presenting footage of a fleet of underwater ships from Atlantis and a group Atlantians riding sharks.

Thomas Muller Remembers His Mentor From Malaysia

Thomas Muller Remembers His Mentor From Malaysia - Thomas Muller is an established international football star, but the Germany and Bayern Munich forward owes a debt of gratitude to a man from South-east Asia.

From 2001 to 2013, former Malaysian international defender Lim Teong Kim, who is also the uncle of ex-Singapore defender Lim Tong Hai, was a coach at Bayern's youth academy.

Famous players like Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos and Muller himself graduated to the first team under his tutelage.

The 2014 World Cup winner broke into a wide smile and spoke effusively when The Straits Times asked him about his former coach Lim.

Muller said: "I learnt very much from him. He has a great eye for tactics and to take the right positions on the pitch.

"He was one of the first coaches I learnt football from, so I enjoyed it very much."

Approaching his peak at 27, Muller's 37 goals in 85 international games ranks him ninth in Germany's all-time list while his 10 strikes in two World Cup Finals gives him a shot at breaking compatriot Miroslav Klose's record of 16.

Lim could not be reached for comment, but in an interview with The Sunday Times three years ago, he complimented Muller for his "huge work ethic".

"He had a huge desire to succeed, which is as important as individual skills if you want to make it far in football," he said then.

"In training, we constantly drilled into him to always follow a shot into the penalty box and anticipate the rebound, which is one of the key aspects of his play now.

"The drills may seem minute and mundane, but Muller practised them fastidiously nonetheless." - The Straits Times/Asia News Network

‘Troll’s Male Organ’ In Norway Re-erected

‘Troll’s Male Organ’ In Norway Re-erected - Norwegians have come out en masse to raise nearly €20,000 (RM98,279) to repair an eye-catching male organ-shaped rock formation apparently knocked down by vandals.

The formation, which local guides had planned to make a tourist destination, is known as Trollpikken, or “The Troll’s Male Appendage” in a very conservative translation.

Hikers in south-western Norway in late June, found the massive rock sectioned off, lying on the ground at the base of the rock face from which it had protruded, AFP reports.

Media accounts of the damage showed traces of drilling on the geological formation. Police have launched an inquiry into potential vandalism.

A local entrepreneur launched an online collection to raise money to put the pieces of the male-organ like rock back together.

By June 21, almost 1,000 donors had responded to the appeal, raising more than 160,000 kroner (RM105,712).

Elsewhere in Norway, another famous rock formation, the Trolltunga, will be closed this season.

Himmelstigen, the famous mountain-biking, hiking and climbing route that runs along a spectacular rock ledge, will be closed in order to undergo renovations, according to tourist body Fjord Norway.

dpa International reports that Fjord Norway has been trying to get the alert out about the closure in order to avoid disappointing travellers and underscores the fact that the classic hiking route to Trolltunga remains open to tourists.

‘Troll’s Male Organ’ In Norway Re-erected

Trolltunga, Norwegian for Troll’s Tongue, is a protruding rock formation around 700 metres above the Ringedalsvatnet reservoir in western Norway. It is considered one of the country’s premier attractions – as well as a truly unique photo opportunity.

Each year, many hikers underestimate the difficulty of Trolltunga.

Some are poorly equipped and, especially when bad weather comes in, end up in dangerous situations. The Red Cross in nearby Odda is often the one called to come to the rescue with emergency assistance.
