Malaysia Nail Six Golds At Asean Schools Games - Goh Jin Wei (pic) led the way as Malaysia swept six out of the seven badminton gold medals at stake in the Asean Schools Games (ASG) in Singapore.
World No. 26 Jin Wei proved to be a class above as she led the girls’ team to a 3-0 rout of Indonesia.
The 17-year-old brushed aside Alifia Intan 21-14, 21-8 before Eoon Qi Xuan and the pair of Pearly Tan-Toh Ee Wei sealed victory.
In the individual final, the Penangite was hardly tested as she beat Qi Xuan 21-8, 21-16.
Pearly-Ee Wei then made it gold No. 3 when they beat Indonesia’s Elvira Arumningtyas-Elizabeth Jovita 21-18, 21-18.
Ee Wei then partnered Ng Eng Cheong to beat teammates Chang Yee Jun-Pearly 20-22, 21-16, 21-14 in the mixed doubles final for Malaysia’s fourth – and her third – gold medal.
Gold No. 5 came courtesy of the Malaysian boys, who crushed hosts Singapore 3-0 in the team final.
Chia Weijie survived an early scare before downing Lee Wei Hong 21-13, 18-21, 21-11 in first singles.
Lim Chong King and Ng Tze Yong sealed victory in the second and third singles ties.
Malaysia’s sixth and final gold came via the boys’ doubles pair of Eng Cheong-Yee Jun, who defeated Singapore’s Andy Kwek-Jason Teh 21-8, 21-17.
Bukit Jalil Sports School’s (BJSS) Weijie and Chong King settled for bronze after losing in the semi-finals of the individual event.
Indonesia’s Nur Yahya won gold after beating teammate Handoko Yusof 21-14, 21-15.
